**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and concerns regarding the future. As a first-year student about to begin my adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was stepping beyond my comfort zone like never before. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and amazing experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. The idea of meeting new people and putting myself out there felt daunting, and if you’re a future student, you might relate. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent countless hours in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties. The crucial takeaway? Take the plunge early. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, remain authentic—Imperial is home to a variety of individuals, and you’re sure to meet people who align with your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and complexity of content at the university level. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from first to second term felt even more overwhelming. It’s easy to fall into self-doubt when witnessing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
What proved most helpful was coming to the realization that everyone else was in the same situation. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that my peers were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. Pursuing assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Staff Support
A standout aspect of my experience has been the phenomenal support from the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in student success and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they ensured consistent communication with us, making certain our concerns were acknowledged.
While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster relationships with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and academic advisors can be incredibly advantageous, and I highly encourage utilizing the available support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I experienced before entering university were unwarranted. With adequate support—from both staff and fellow students—maneuvering through university life becomes significantly more manageable. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve found ways to balance academic responsibilities with personal enjoyment.
For anyone on the verge of beginning their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: embrace the journey, seek help when necessary, and don’t hesitate to reach out. While the challenges may appear intimidating at first, they will ultimately foster growth, friendships, and unforgettable experiences.
