**Reflecting on My Initial Year at Imperial College London**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what was to come. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, and stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Challenge of Making Friends

One of the primary hurdles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your foremost worries. I vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Imperial has turned into a second home for me, and all it required was a little small talk with individuals who were navigating the same experience.

So, what did I discover? I found that taking the first step is always worthwhile. Even when you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned that the best version of yourself is simply being you. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The transition from A-levels was clear, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even tougher. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your own capabilities, especially when witnessing others engrossed in intense study sessions.

What guided me through this period was the understanding that everyone faces struggles at some stage. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others share that same challenge. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely care about our success and are always receptive to input. They are aware of the difficulties we encounter and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.

I only began to fully utilize the available pastoral support toward the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. One of the most beneficial decisions I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing this can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest lesson? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Looking Back

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt before starting university was largely unfounded. There are abundant support systems available, from both staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating this transition. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic demands while still enjoying my time at university.

If you’re about to set out on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You may be surprised by how much you evolve along the way.
