**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainties, and doubts regarding what was in store for me. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the greatest obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share the same concern. On my first day in student housing, the thought of meeting new people was so daunting that I opted to stay in my room the entire day, steering clear of social interactions.
However, as time progressed, I began to slowly venture out of my comfort zone. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here are like a second family, and all it required was initiating brief conversations with others who were similarly situated.
The essential lesson I took away? Make the effort. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is diverse, and you will uncover those who share your interests.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the course’s demands and complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university life was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. At times, watching others study with assurance made me question my own capabilities.
What assisted me during this period was the realization that everyone encounters difficulties. If something confuses you, there’s a good chance others feel the same way. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for support is among the most critical skills you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always willing to engage in discussions regarding any challenges we may encounter. They understand our struggles and maintain open lines of communication to tackle any concerns.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later on, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make use of the assistance available—you can never have too much support.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I have realized that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even during my time here—was often unwarranted. A multitude of support systems, from staff to peers, exists to aid you through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone, and enjoying university life is entirely feasible even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
If you’re about to begin your adventure at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: embrace the journey, seek assistance as necessary, and keep in mind that everyone is navigating their own path together.
