**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was set to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, diving into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and countless memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in the student accommodations—before classes had even commenced—I spent an entire day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture outside and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it simply required stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances.

What’s the key takeaway? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel adequately prepared, there will be countless ice-breaking events and chances to socialize. Most importantly, just be genuine—Imperial is home to a diverse crowd, and you are sure to meet like-minded individuals.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more intense. It’s easy to become daunted or question your abilities when observing your peers studying, but one valuable realization was that everyone is navigating similar struggles.

If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most beneficial skills you can hone during your initial year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They are genuinely committed to ensuring students succeed and are consistently open to feedback and conversations regarding any obstacles we encounter. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier.

One of the wisest decisions I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main lesson? Leverage the support at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Closing Reflections

Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I harbored before entering university was largely unfounded. The myriad support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, ensure that no one has to tackle challenges alone. More critically, I’ve learned to manage stress—whether stemming from exams or deadlines—while also enjoying my university life.

For anyone poised to commence their journey at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: take the leap, seek assistance when necessary, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about a remarkable first year.
