### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the journey ahead. As I prepared to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, I felt daunted by the prospect. As someone who has always been introverted, entering this new phase was quite daunting. Reflecting back, I recognize a year that has been characterized by personal development, challenges, and numerous enjoyable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I stand now?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant obstacle for me was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you are an incoming student, this might resonate with your own worries. On my very first day in student housing, I was so apprehensive about meeting new people that I ended up spending the entire day tucked away in my room. However, looking at my current situation, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
What’s the key takeaway? Take that first step. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others in similar situations will present themselves. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With a wonderfully varied student community, you’re sure to discover individuals who match your interests and values.
#### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite pronounced, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by diligent classmates.
What helped me navigate this experience? Reminding myself that I was not alone. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others were struggling too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether it be from peers or professors. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it’s an essential step toward achieving success.
#### The Value of Seeking Assistance
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always willing to listen and engage in discussions regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not utilizing it sooner.
One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with the teaching staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support available; you can never have too much assistance!
#### Closing Thoughts
This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before entering university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support systems available—from staff to fellow students—to help you tackle the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to juggle academic pressures while enjoying a fulfilling university life.
As I look ahead, I feel increasingly confident and enthusiastic about the future. To any prospective students reading this: embrace the journey, take that leap, and seize every opportunity that comes your way.
