**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past year, I now see it as a time of personal growth, obstacles, and many unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of apprehension. During my first day in student housing, I found myself spending the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had—relationships that feel like family.
What did I take away from this experience? Making that first move is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at helping you connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. Given the diverse student population, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
The shift from A-levels to university was a considerable leap, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. There were moments when I felt inundated or questioned my capabilities, especially amidst fellow diligent students. However, I soon recognized that everyone shared similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, the likelihood was that others were having difficulties too.
The main lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Support Services
A standout aspect of my journey has been the exceptional support offered by teaching staff. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner.
Becoming a year well-being representative allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and leveraging these opportunities can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support provided—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university was largely unfounded. With effective support systems in place—from both faculty and peers—help is always accessible. Most importantly, I’ve discovered how to balance academic demands with the enjoyment of university life.
If you’re gearing up to embark on your own university adventure, embrace the challenges, take the plunge, and seize every opportunity. You won’t regret it!
