**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year at Imperial College London**

In October 2022, I was engulfed by apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt about the path ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been relatively shy and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Upon reflection, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the process of making new friends. If you’re a future student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent countless hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions. Nevertheless, as I reflect today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life—individuals who have become like a second family to me.
What did I come to understand? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was adjusting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to question your capabilities when you observe others studying while feeling like you’re just trying to catch up.
What aided me during this period? Reminding myself that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I encountered a challenge, it was likely that others did as well. The most valuable lesson I grasped was the importance of seeking help—whether it be from classmates or professors. Asking for assistance is not a weakness; it’s a crucial skill that can have a significant impact on your academic path.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most enriching parts of my journey has been the exceptional support from the faculty in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are always willing to listen to feedback. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out sooner.
At the year’s outset, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative. This position facilitated relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this past year has shown me that much of the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support mechanisms in place, from faculty to fellow students, that can help ease your transition. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a vibrant and rewarding university life is entirely achievable.
