**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who once tended to be shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the greatest obstacles I faced initially was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in student housing, spending much of it inside my room, feeling too apprehensive to go out and meet new people. However, fast forward to now, and I am pleased to say that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The essential lesson? Take the plunge. Even if you feel hesitant at the start, there are ample ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to help you meet others. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the heavier workload and complexity of university academics. The transition from A-levels was marked, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At times, witnessing others study left me questioning my capabilities.

What assisted me during this period was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find a topic challenging, it’s likely that others are encountering difficulties as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it be from classmates or professors.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

In relation to professors, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They sincerely want students to thrive and are always willing to listen to concerns. Although I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had acted on it sooner.

Taking on the role of a year well-being representative enabled me to foster connections with faculty, which became immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues for engaging with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My most crucial takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much help.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was mostly unfounded. There are extensive support structures in place, both from staff and fellow students, to facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I am never truly by myself and that balancing academic pressures with an enjoyable university life is achievable.

If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial or any other institution, my straightforward advice is this: embrace the journey, seek out support when necessary, and don’t shy away from stepping outside your comfort zone. You may very well be surprised by how much you develop.
