### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer, and venturing into the unfamiliar was quite challenging for someone as shy and reserved as I had been. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. Yet, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the foremost challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be among your primary worries as well. On my very first day at the student residence, just prior to the term kicking off, I spent a full day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and say hello. However, flash forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve made some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like they’re part of my family.

What has this taught me? The hardest step is always the first, but it is undoubtedly rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be true to yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re certain to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant obstacle was adapting to the increased volume of work and the heightened complexity of the material. Transitioning from A-levels to university was a substantial leap, and the shift from the first to the second term was particularly intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed, especially when you observe peers studying hard and start to question your own capabilities.

What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulties grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same challenge. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Cultivating the ability to ask for help early on is one of the most crucial skills you can acquire during your first year.

#### The Significance of Interacting with Faculty

One of the most comforting aspects of my program has been the remarkable support from the teaching staff. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I made the bold choice to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be tremendously helpful. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. Numerous support systems exist, ranging from staff to fellow students, to aid you in overcoming challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and that it is feasible to balance academic demands with a rewarding and enjoyable university experience.

If you are about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the adventure that lies ahead.
