**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and anticipation as I geared up to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who used to be quite introverted, stepping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant challenges I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this concern might resonate with you as well. I recall my first day in student housing, where I spent hours in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone. However, as time went on, I slowly ventured out of my shell, engaged in casual conversations, and connected with others in similar situations.

Today, I can proudly claim that I’ve created some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Imperial has transformed into a second home, and the individuals I’ve met feel like family. The takeaway? Make that initial move. Even if you feel apprehensive, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, embrace your true self—Imperial is filled with a diverse array of people, and you’re bound to encounter those with shared interests.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university-level studies proved to be another considerable challenge. The amount of work increased, and the complexity of the material surged, particularly transitioning from the first to the second term. At times, I questioned if I was keeping pace, especially when I noticed my peers studying with great diligence.

What aided me through this was the realization that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates were grappling with similar difficulties. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. The best advice I can offer is to reach out for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, seeking help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty sincerely care about students’ well-being and academic achievements. They comprehend the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which helped me forge connections with staff members. Getting acquainted with your professors and support staff can be tremendously beneficial, and I urge new students to utilize the resources available. You can never have an excess of support!

### Closing Thoughts

Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. There is always support at hand, whether it’s from faculty or fellow students. Most significantly, I’ve discovered that university life isn’t solely about academics; it’s also about cherishing the journey, even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.

If you’re on the brink of starting your adventure at Imperial, embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You are never alone in this journey, and there’s a wealth of benefits to be gained from stepping out of your comfort zone.
