**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite introverted, immersing myself in this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize a journey full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and how far have I come?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a new student, you might share this concern. On my initial day in student housing, I was so daunted that I isolated myself in my room for the whole day, too anxious to introduce myself to others. However, as I reflect on my experience now, I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and it simply required stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others in similar situations.

So, what insights did I gain? Taking that first step is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your skills when witnessing others studying fervently. However, one of the most essential lessons I acquired was that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you find a concept difficult, chances are others do too—so never hesitate to seek assistance.

Obtaining support is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to peers or asking professors for clarification, help is always within reach.

### The Significance of Staff Support

One aspect that particularly impressed me was the remarkable support from the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and offering advice.

Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are countless ways to reach out to lecturers and support staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university life. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Thoughts

Upon reflection, my first year at university has enlightened me that many of the fears and worries I harbored were unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help maneuver through the intricacies of university life. Most crucially, I’ve realized that I’m never alone. Even amid the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to enjoy my time and capitalize on this amazing experience.

If you’re set to begin university and feeling apprehensive, recognize that it’s entirely normal—but also understand that you will evolve, adjust, and find your niche. Take that step, seek help when necessary, and embrace the adventure that lies ahead.
