**Musings on My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an inherently shy and reserved individual, immersing myself in an entirely new environment felt intimidating. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One significant struggle I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day settling into student housing—I was so apprehensive that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to meet anyone.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up conversations with others who shared similar experiences.
So, what have I gleaned? First, taking that crucial first step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with new people. Secondly, being true to yourself is paramount. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands of the curriculum and the complexity of the materials. There was a distinct leap from A-levels to university, and an even steeper ascent between the first and second terms. At various points, it was easy to feel overwhelmed and question my capabilities, especially when observing my peers who appeared more confident in their studies.
What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone encounters difficulties at some stage. If you find something confusing, chances are others are in the same boat. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Developing the ability to ask for support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### Valuing Support from Faculty
One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly wants students to thrive and is always receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we face and actively strive to assist us throughout the year.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my course. This position enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with lecturers and academic faculties, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Never hesitate to tap into the resources and support frameworks at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt prior to beginning university was entirely normal—and often unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in navigating the transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that I’m never isolated, and it is indeed possible to balance academic pressures with an enjoyable and rewarding university life.
If you are preparing to embark on your adventure at Imperial, my straightforward advice is: take that leap, reach out for assistance when necessary, and seize every opportunity that arises. You will be surprised at the extent of your growth in just a year.
